The manufacture of optical components has been the most successful early manufacturing application of
imprint through companies such as Heptagon and NanoOpto. The defect density requirement is particularly
forgiving. Patterned Media for hard disks and photonic crystals for LED have been discussed as a possible
volume applications. Integrated Circuits is the largest potential application with the most demanding
requirements particularly for defects.
In all cases, the economics of manufacturing requires the maximum possible number of devices per
substrate - the whole substrate must be covered.
